Volunteer Tutors Help Kids To Read
Thirty-four 4Cs volunteer tutors helped 103 students in grades 1-4 improve their
reading skills during the 2023-2024 school year. With the help of tutors, 93% of the children whose scores were reported met their goal, which is an improvement of academic performance. The results are based on reading assessment scores provided
by Martin County school administrators.
“We’re so happy to see these children progress in such an important skill,” said Lynn Lewis, Literacy Director who oversees the Caring Children Clothing Children tutoring program. “We are always looking for adults willing to spend an hour or two a week to
help a child read,” she said. Ms. Lewis said that only one thing is important to be a successful tutor: a sincere interest in helping a child. Prior teaching experience
isn’t necessary.
Ms. Lewis provides the training for new volunteers, plus materials and support. Tutors work with two children at a time in their school once a week. 4Cs tutors help children in six elementary schools in Martin County.

Caring Children Van Delivers Clothes and Shoes
The 4Cs van has been busy delivering clothing, books, and vouchers for new shoes to disadvantaged youngsters this year. The van has made stops to several neighborhoods and has joined efforts with other agencies such as United Way and Boys and Girls Club. Altogether, the van reached 1,235 children this fiscal year, bringing them much joy as they picked out their new clothes and books.
Gigi Suntum, 4Cs executive director, said the van has resulted in a significant
improvement in reaching children who need help. “Not everyone has the ability to come to the 4Cs store, so now we are able to bring our services directly to people who need them,” she said.
Volunteers are needed to help with the van. There is especially a need for Spanish-
speaking volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please call 772-221-8777.
Thank you United Way of Martin County for providing our
clothing program for 2023!
Thank you Premier Realty Foundation for a $2,000 donation for a much-needed commercial washer and dryer and clothing donation bin.
Become a Volunteer Reading or Math Tutor
Caring Children Clothing Children recognizes there are many children who need help with reading and math on an on-going basis. We sponsor and train in-school tutors who work with children once a week with reading or math skills.
If you would like to become a tutor to a student in a Martin County Elementary School who has been identified as reading below grade level or behind in math, please contact Lynn Lewis, 4Cs Literacy Coordinator at [email protected]
Volunteer tutors receive several hours of training and materials for each child. We currently have 200 students annually benefitting from tutoring.
